Peloton (PTON:NSD) stock Skids on Recall

Peloton Bike Recall

Peloton (PTON) stock slid on Thursday after the company recalled more than 2 million bikes for repairs, creating concerns among investors and further impacting the company’s stock performance. In a joint statement with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Peloton announced a voluntary recall of its original bike model sold from January 2018 to May 2023.

The recall was prompted by safety concerns related to the seat post, which can break unexpectedly during use, posing a potential fall and injury risk. Peloton received 35 reports of seat post breakages and detachments, resulting in 13 injuries, including fractured wrists, lacerations, and bruises. The recall is limited to the Peloton original Bike model, identifiable by its PL-01 model label, and the company is offering free replacement seats for affected customers to install at home.

Following the recall announcement, Peloton shares plummeted by over 7%, contributing to a cumulative decline of nearly 40% over the past month. The company had previously warned of a potential subscriber dip in the current quarter, adding to investor apprehensions.

This is not the first time Peloton has faced scrutiny from the CPSC. In May 2021, the company recalled 125,000 Tread+ treadmills following a tragic incident involving the death of a child and numerous reported incidents to the CPSC. Peloton’s stock tumbled by 15% on that occasion, and the company paid a $19 million fine, one of the largest civil penalties ever imposed by the CPSC. Peloton faced criticism for not promptly informing the CPSC despite receiving customer complaints.

However, the impact of the current bike recall on Peloton’s stock may differ from the treadmill incident. BMO Capital Markets equity analyst Simeon Siegel suggests that while shares initially declined in response to the news, the financial implications for the company are expected to be materially different. In the case of the treadmill recall, Peloton provided full refunds to customers. In contrast, the bike recall involves the shipment of new bike seats, which is a lesser expense for the company.

Siegel highlights that although the recall is negative, it may not be as severe as initially perceived, given the company’s proactive collaboration with the CPSC to address the issue—an approach that differed from the treadmill recall.

As Peloton works with the CPSC to resolve the safety concerns and replace the affected bike seats, the company’s ability to effectively manage the recall and rebuild consumer confidence will be critical in determining its future performance in the market.
